Nigerians Protest at CBN Headquarters for Governor's Resignation and Arrest

Some Nigerians are protesting at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters. They want the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to resign and be arrested over the failed new naira notes policy. The protesters are holding placards, accusing Emefiele of causing hardship and death to many Nigerians. They are under the George Uboh Whistle-blower Network and plan to stay until their demands are met.

The protest leader, George Uboh, said that Emefiele has committed genocide by forcing Nigerians to queue endlessly at banks to get cash. They demand that Emefiele provide the new naira notes and address the people. The Supreme Court ruled that the policy caused undue hardship to Nigerians. Uboh described the policy as insensitive and has crippled small businesses.

The security agents, including the police, army, and DSS operatives, have surrounded the building to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order. A senior police officer has invited Uboh to discuss the need for peaceful protest and to avoid disrupting traffic.

CBN Adds 7,552 BVN on Watchlist and Plans to Close Millions of Bank Accounts Linked to Fraud

CBN Adds 7,552 BVN on Watchlist and Plans to Close Millions of Bank Accounts

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has increased the number of Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) on its watchlist to 7,552. The account holders on the BVN are being investigated for fraudulent activities. Furthermore, the CBN plans to close millions of bank accounts in Access Bank, UBA, and 26 other banks linked to BVN.

Musa Jimoh, the Director of the Payment Systems Management Department of the apex bank, disclosed the latest update on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in Calabar. Jimoh, represented by Adefuye Adeyemi, the assistant director in the department, revealed that individuals investigated for various fraud risks could be excluded from the financial system.

He also highlighted the increasing importance of BVN in supporting the development of credit profiles for depositors and improving access to credit. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, represented by the Director of Monetary Policy, Hassan Mahmud, disclosed that the total BVN enrollment had increased to 57.43 million as of March 31, 2023.

Emefiele emphasized the importance of BVN in the bank's Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements and how it has helped in tracking, identifying, and investigating fraudulent financial transactions. However, he also pointed out the challenges in implementing digital payment systems due to weak social infrastructure, such as unstable telecommunication networks and power infrastructure.

Emefiele expressed concern about the nefarious activities of unlicensed entities in the payment value chain and how they continue to exploit access to information technology to engage in regulated activities without appropriate licenses and authorization. He added that the activities of fraudsters continue to threaten the resilience of payment platforms and impact the public's confidence.

The CBN plans to close bank accounts without BVN to clean up the sector and reduce fraud. BVN is a unique identifier capturing biometric data used to verify customer identities and prevent fraud.
